In 1996, Upward Bound at USM began assisting
qualified, low income students attending Bonny Eagle, Massabesic, Portland, and Sacopee Valley High Schools to prepare to
become the first in their families to graduate from college. In the fall of 2003, we began working with students from Sanford
and Biddeford High Schools.
The summer, residential program serves 70+ juniors and seniors
with academic coursework, part-time employment, college and career exploration, and cultural, recreational, and community
service experiences for six weeks on the Gorham campus of the University of Southern Maine. Career exploration, tutoring,
academic advising, college visits, cultural experiences, and college admissions and financial aid planning assistance are
provided to 100+ sophomores, juniors, and seniors during the school year. We are funded by two separate grants from the US
Department of Education.
A program of the College of Education and Human Development,
Upward Bound at USM is one of nearly 800 such programs around the United States funded by the US Department of Education.
Our theme, "Mainers in the World: Exploring Connections" is reflected in all aspects of the program.
